Communication ports
To deploy and maintain BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™ that have a serial connection to the
BlackBerry® Manager, you must enable the ports to which they are connected. Handhelds that have a
USB connection are detected automatically when connected to the computer, and they appear in the
BlackBerry Manager Ports window.
Define handheld connection settings
1. Connect the handheld to the administration computer on which the BlackBerry Manager is installed.
2. In the BlackBerry Manager, on the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click Serial Ports.
4. In the COM1 and COM2 sections, perform one of the following actions:

If the software cannot detect the handheld on a COM port or USB port, the ”There are no connected
handhelds” message displays. Verify that the handheld and cradle cable or the USB cable appears to be
connected securely, and that no other handhelds are sharing the port.

Note: Do not enable ports to which other devices are connected.
Action Procedure
Enable the port. ! From the drop-down list, select True.
Set the port speed. ! From the drop-down list, select a speed.
Support a USB to serial adapter
connection.

Note: If the handheld is connected to the computer on which the BlackBerry Manager is installed, when you open a user’s
Properties window, a message prompts you to assign the handheld to that user.
