4: Configuring Handheld Software on an administration computer
Configure required software
1. Open the .alx file that is associated with the installed Handheld Software application.
2. Perform one of the following actions:
Create the software index
For the Application Loader to locate software to install, the Handheld Software must be indexed on the
administration computer that hosts the shared software. The Application Loader reads the list of
installed software from the index and displays it in the Handheld Application Selection window. Each
software bundle generates the following index files:
specification.pkg
PkgDBCache.xml
1. At the command prompt, type cd %CommonProgramFiles%\Research In Motion\Apploader.
2. Type loader.exe/index. The Application Loader builds the directory structure in the shared software
directory and adds any missing index files for installed software upgrades.
Share Handheld Software and upgrade tools
1. Verify that the handheld upgrade software is installed in
<drive:>
\Program Files\Common
Files\Research In Motion.
2. Share
<drive:>
\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion.
3. Set the permission attributes to Read-only.
Warnings: Changing the software .alx file overwrites the application settings defined in the software configuration or in
the Application Loader.
If <required>true</required> is added to a software .alx file, the software application cannot be removed from the
handheld.
Action Procedure
Configure required
Handheld Software.
1. Below the line <copyright>Copyright 1998-2004 Research In Motion</copyright>, type
<required>true</required>.
2. Save the .alx file.
Configure required
third-party
applications.
1. Within the <application> element, type <required>true</required>.
2. Save the .alx file.
Note: Make sure that the handheld you are deploying Handheld Software upgrades to has sufficient storage space to
accommodate all of the Handheld Software applications and third-party applications that contain the <required>true</
required> element. If a handheld has insufficient space during the upgrade, the upgrade fails.
Note: You must create the software index for third-party applications, Java-based Handheld Software versions 3.6 and
newer (excluding 4.0), and C++-based Handheld Software versions 2.0 and newer (excluding 2.7).
Tips: If you modify an .alx file after creating a software index, re-index the Handheld Software. At the command prompt,
type cd %CommonProgramFiles%\Research In Motion\Apploader. Type loader.exe/reindex.
Run the Application Loader locally to verify that the required applications are selected in the Handheld Application
Selection screen.
Note: The Handheld Manager must be installed on user computers. The Application Loader connects to a BlackBerry
handheld. See
“Configuring the BlackBerry Desktop Software installation files” on page 11 for more information on
deploying the Handheld Manager to user computers.
