3: Issuing existing handhelds to new users
Activate a new handheld
! Perform one of the following actions:
Issuing existing handhelds to new users
You can issue an existing handheld to a new user using the administration computer or wirelessly. If you
issue a handheld using the administration computer, the handheld must be connected to the
administration computer.
If you issue a handheld wirelessly, the handheld does not have to be in your possession when you
redistribute the handheld.
Switch the user account on the handheld
! Perform one of the following actions:
Action Procedure
Activate a handheld connected
to the administration computer.
1. Enable email pre-population if desired. See “Enabling email prepopulation” on page 17
for more information.
2. Assign the new handheld to the user. See “Assign a handheld to a user” on page 18 for
more information.
Activate a handheld wirelessly. 1. Enable email prepopulation if desired. See “Enabling email prepopulation” on page 17
for more information.
2. Perform a wireless activation. See “Deploying handhelds wirelessly” on page 19 for
more information.
3. Send users the path to the Application Loader tool or instruct users to run the backup
and restore utility in the Desktop Manager.
Note: When handhelds are deployed wirelessly, users must run the Application Loader or
the backup and restore utility in the Desktop Manager to back up their handheld data to
the database. See
“Appendix C: Wireless backup and restore” on page 45 for more
information.
Action Procedure
Redistribute a handheld using
the administration computer.
1. Delete all handheld data. See “Manage handheld security” on page 29 for more
information.
2. Assign the handheld to the new user. See “Assign a handheld to a user” on page 18 for
more information.
Redistribute a handheld
wirelessly.
1. Disable the handheld and delete stored information. See “Disable a handheld and
delete stored information.” on page 29 for more information.
2. Enable email prepopulation if desired. See “Manage handheld security” on page 29 for
more information.
3. Perform a wireless activation. See “Deploying handhelds wirelessly” on page 19 for
more information.
Note: When users enter the activation password, they are prompted by the handheld
to switch the email address and delete handheld data.
4. Send users the path to the remote Application Loader tool or instruct users to run the
backup and restore utility in the Desktop Manager.
